FG Releases N50 Billion to Settle University Staff Allowances

The Federal Government has released N50 billion to settle outstanding allowances for academic and non-academic staff in federal universities, fulfilling a key promise made by President Bola Tinubu.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, announced the payment on Wednesday, describing it as a major step in the government’s plan to improve education in Nigeria.
In a statement by the Federal Ministry of Education, the government said the move shows Tinubu’s strong commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education system and shifting the economy from resource-based to knowledge-based.
“This is not just about money—it’s about our belief in Nigerian youth and the important role teachers and staff play in shaping their future,” Alausa said. “By supporting our educators, we are ensuring better education for every child.”
The statement also praised university unions for maintaining peace, leading to one of the longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent years.
President Tinubu reassured Nigerians that his administration will continue to prioritise education. “Our youth are the future,” he said. “Keeping students in school is non-negotiable. Strikes will soon become a thing of the past.”
This payment comes after years of disputes between university staff and previous governments over unpaid allowances. The latest move is expected to ease tensions and support smoother operations in federal universities.
