ASUU Rejects FG’s N50 Billion Allowance Claim, Demands Full Funding of Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has dismissed the federal government’s claim that it released N50 billion as Earned Allowance for lecturers, saying no official communication confirms the payment.
A source within ASUU, speaking anonymously at the University of Abuja, told THISDAY that the union’s key demand remains proper funding for universities, including the immediate release of N220 billion yearly for revitalization and N150 billion in unpaid earned allowances.
The source described the reported N50 billion as “paltry” and unrelated to ASUU’s demands. He expressed frustration over the government’s announcement to the media without formal notice to the union.
ASUU leaders are reviewing the situation and will soon issue an official statement. The source warned that the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) will reject the N50 billion if confirmed, insisting on full implementation of the 2009 agreement.
He also accused Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa of politicizing the agreement, further straining relations between the union and the government.
The rejection signals continued tension, with ASUU standing firm on its demands for better university funding.
